OBESSU attended Human Rights training in Georgia!
OBESSU is invited to many events, but this was the first time we attended an event organised by GSSUA (Georgian School Student Union) with the title “Human Rights for All Georgian School Students“ held in Tbilisi from 28th to 30th Septembe, supported by the Council of Europe.
OBESSU was invited to hold a workshop on rights of students & youth and share best examples of approaching these issues in Europe. During OBESSU’s workshop the participants worked with the Declaration of School Student Rights, they heard about OBESSU‘s Light on the Rights campaign and saw the trailer of the Light on the Rights documentary which both inspired and made them more interested in actual actions, not just the theory. As the Georgian legislation is not the most student friendly in Europe, the possibility to see that students fight for their rights in many countries and the situation can be changed, was eye-opening. The participants learned about the International day of Students, its history and the reasons behind this day. This led to a change in the way of thinking and created enthusiasm to change something, even if only in their schools.
“Personally, it was an amazing and interesting experience as I have never facilitated a workshop which had to be translated from English to Georgian and back. It made me realise once again that language is not the biggest barrier, but on the other hand I felt like even though everything was being translated, I was missing something and I could have given more to the participants, but the time was used on saying the things twice in both languages. Apart from that, it is amazing that OBESSU could represent student and youth rights on an event that was not organised by us or our Members and Observers. It is always motivating to see how people react to what we do and how they get inspired by our actions.“ – Daša, Board Member of OBESSU
