17th of November: Get Ready!
The 17th of November, the International day of students, is now getting closer. As you know the GA of OBESSU adopted a resolution which engages OBESSU and its member organisations in promoting the 17th of November's celebration. We will mobilize on the basis of the political stand points contained in the Final Statement of the European Student Assembly held in Malmo, Sweden, during the European Social Forum 2008. Therefore the board would like to foster every member organisation to promote events, demonstrations, symbolic actions, conferences or any other activity to promote the celebration of the 17th of November and to support students' rights and public, free, democratic education for all as stated in the Final Statements. Of course every organisation should also take advantage of this day to put forward its campaigns and demands at national level.

UDS - "Reforms" of Education in Italy
In the last two weeks a great movement, especially formed by students, has grown in Italy, putting together school students, students fro university ,parents, teachers and even principals against two discussed law proposed by the conservative government.
The first it is the financial decree number 133 which contains some articles regarding huge cutbacks of the funding that financed the public university and the research (about 8 billion euros),the possibility to transform public universities in private foundations and the block of the turn-over for teachers at university(just one every five years will be employed instead of the already insufficient number of before: two).
The second it is the law number 137 (approved with few votes in the Parliament after a month of big demonstrations against this law, with more than 450 demonstrations all over Italy) which establishes the reintroduction of the evaluation of the behaviour as a mark conditioning the fact to move up the class, the compulsory age for schooling has been lowered from up to 16 to 14,at elementary school there will be just a teacher per class, and many school will not be able anymore to be opened also in the afternoon.

Education Cutbacks in Ireland
The Irish government released its annual budget a fortnight ago. Due to the current global economic crisis and the recession in Ireland, many cuts have been made in government spending for 2009. Many of these cuts have been made in the education sector. Schools have had their salary allowances cut by 3% which means that no additional staff can be hired to deal with an increase in student numbers so all teachers will be stretched to capacity. This will result in no teachers being available to substitute for other teachers in the event of a teacher being out sick etc. The Irish teachers' unions are predicting that students will have to be sent home from school next year, as there will be no teachers available to supervise them if their teachers are absent.

UNL: Education in Danger!
The reform of upper secondary school began officially on the 3rd September. Three organisations of secondary school students were invited to participate at the conception of this reform. For a reform of this importance, only 4 months were given to reflect upon it! We knew it was not enough to allow a reflection of quality, but our opinion wasn't taken into account anyway. The government has begun to give information about the content of this reform. Nothing to be enthusiastic about. The Government wants to transform lessons into modules, and people would just have to chose how much they want of one subject, and when.

Obessu Supports "Learn Without" Fear Campaign
OBESSU would like to express its’ support to Plan International who this week released a groundbreaking report demonstrating that girls as young as ten are being forced to have sex by their teachers and threatened with poor grades and failure if they refuse. As well as PLAN, OBESSU strongly arrogate an end of all violence against school students. Forcing children has nothing to do with education. In the opinion of OBESSU the state has to provide school as a safe and free space for the individual development of each single school student. Violence against children has to be considered as what it is – a crime. The European School Student Unions urgently call on the EU to start working on this problem out- and inside the EU.

Coming Soon! 4th European School Students Convention
After the success of the first three European School Student Conventions, OBESSU decided to organise the 4th ESSC in Maastricht, the Netherlands, from the 2nd to the 8th of December. When developing the future of Europe, it is essential to start from common policies on education and from a comprehensive, diversified and intercultural flow of knowledge. School students have necessarily a leading role in this process. Our experience and our opinion can enrich the educational systems in their complexity. Therefore, OBESSU will organise an event where we will discuss the Future of Education in Europe. The Convention is the moment when students from all over Europe have the possibility to influence decisions which affect them but are often made far away from them. We will finally come to a European school student position on the topic of “The Future of Secondary Education in Europe”.

AKS: Stop sale on education in Italy!
Aktion kritischer SchülerInnen (AKS) shows its solidarity with the Italian students. On Wednesday the Italian government passed a budget reduction for education of 8 billion euros. "The reduction is showing very clearly, what education means to governments in Europe of today and the certain way, which have been choosen by them.“, says Klaus Baumgartner, president of AKS, "Taking away public funding pushes on the marketisation in the field of education and also advance to emergence of private schools and universities.“ Baumgartner’s conclusion: "The social background of every student is going to determine the access on knowledge more and more in Italy, but also in whole Europe. Since Students are the society of tomorrow, it is not the brightest idea to cut down on their education.“
