Brief history
The Union of Finnish Upper Secondary School Students (SLL), founded in 1985, is a national, politically and ethnically independent lobbying, service and leisure organisation for upper secondary school students. The union represents each of the approximately 120.000 upper secondary school students in governmental, municipal and provincial work groups and takes part in all decisions concerning upper secondary school students.

Its 50.000 members form the backbone of the union. These members are divided into ten regional and three member organizations.

In terms of numbers, SLL is the largest student organization in Finland based on voluntary membership.

SLL is considered one of the leading experts in matters concerning upper secondary school and its students, and has a high status and reputation within the Ministry of Education. SLL is also recognized for its quality activities, making it a model for other organizations.

Members

Members are the core of SLL. Member services are an important part of the organisation’s activities. SLL’s membership card, which is an official student card, is the most concrete benefit of the membership. This card proves that the holder is studying in upper secondary school, providing an official student’s status. The holder is also entitled to discounts for SLL’s national and local events, long-distance bus and train travels and to tens of national and hundreds of local membership discounts as well as to all the general student discounts.

Main aims

“We stay awake while you sleep” has been for years the motto for SLL’s lobby work. SLL strives to do its best so that no decision concerning upper secondary school students is made without consulting them. Representatives of the union have, amongst other things, taken part in decisions concerning tuition fees as well as the development of the national curriculum and the matriculation examination.

Examples of activities organised by SLL

SLL organizes annually nearly 20 national training events and seminars where students are amongst other things trained to lobby and organise events within their respective student bodies and regional organisations. The regional organisations working within SLL organise local events such as student body get-togethers and parties. SLL operates on the basis of its rules, strategy and principles as well as its political platform and work plan.
